NFL Draft Quick Hits - Andrew Luck

By:  Bobby Shores

Sorry for my lack of posts lately, my paying job has been taking up a lot of my time....I know, it's not a good excuse, but until I can get some more of y'all to contribute (write) here than I am still a 1-man show. So since I felt the need to get some football stuff out of my head and onto paper (well a blog/computer screen, which is like the "new paper") and since the draft is coming up, I figured I would do some quick hitters on some draft prospects. These are not my full scouting reports, just my initial thoughts after watching film, reviewing my notes, and watching the combine. My first one today is on Andrew Luck.

Andrew Luck - I don't think the Colts can go wrong picking Luck, he seems to have all the tools needed to be a very successful NFL quarterback, but I am not willing to say that he is a "sure fire Hall of Famer" like most people out there seem to be proclaiming. I have liked him for a while now, but there are a few things that make me pause.

In some of the games I watched against some of the better teams I did not see the sound decision making that I like to see in the elite signal callers. Specifically, it appeared that he was timid when making deep throws and to often checked down due to what I felt was hesitation, almost like he didn't believe in himself. I want my quarterback to throw the ball with confidence and conviction every time. My other problem with him is that he has never played a down in the NFL, and yes I realize that applies to EVERY draft prospect, but to me I see the confidence and the proper attitude in interviews I just don't always see it on the field, which is where I want to see it.

So what is my overall impression of Luck? I think he will end up being a very good quarterback in the NFL, he has the tools to be an elite quarterback, it just worries me when people start piling on what could be unreasonable expectations onto a guy before he plays a down at the next level. I remember when Mitch Mustain committed to the Arkansas Razorbacks, and he was expected to bring multiple National Championships and Heisman Trophies....he flamed out, transferred to USC where he was a career backup before getting arrested for drugs and barely even made it on the field.
