AFC North Week 3 Wrap-Up

By:  Marcus Wyche

Hey Sports fans, how was your Sunday? The AFC North did very well and I was wrong on 1 of my picks, but none of us are perfect. Let's take a look back at yesterday's action and see what really happened.

The Ravens went into St Louis and beat the Rams down. The Ravens went in and dropped over 500 yards of offense and I must say, who saw that coming, I know I didn't? I thought the Rams were bad against the run, but it looked like they were just as bad against the pass. Torrey Smith, the second round draft pick out of Maryland, blew by the Rams secondary on two long touchdown passes. I knew the kid could run, but I didn't know he had that kind of speed. During the preseason, a lot of Raven fans said Smith couldn't catch, but maybe he was just nervous and pressing a little too much. Yesterday, he showed why the Ravens drafted him. He took the top off of the defense and his first 3 catches as a pro, netted him 3 touchdowns and 144yrds. Ray Rice made his presence known in the both the run game and the passing game. On his big run, I could have swore he broke the ankles of at least 3 would be defenders and the only reason why he didn't take it to the house, was due to a face mask penalty. The defense shut down the Rams and their soon to be great QB. Sam Bradford was harassed the entire game. He was able to put together one drive, that netted them a touchdown in the third quarter, but other than that, this was a total beat down by the Ravens. Ngata, got his first touchdown, with a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Suggs and company sacked Bradford 4 times. It really looked like the Rams were expecting one thing from the Ravens and they did the total opposite and the Rams could not adjust to what the Ravens were doing. The score could have been a lot worse if some of Flacco's throws had not sailed on him. The only thing that bothered me, was the coaches left the starters in way to long. Flacco got sacked twice and then fumbled, to me, he should not have been in the game with a 30pt lead. What would have happened if Flacco had gotten hurt when he fumbled? There are times when you call off the dogs. 5 minutes left in the game and the Rams had no chance of catching us. Pull your starters and let your backups get some real playing time. Ravens 37 Rams 7

The Steelers vs Colts game was closer then I or anyone expected. I really thought the Steelers would have beat the Colts into the ground, but the Colts showed they were not going to roll over for the mighty Steelers. The Steelers still have problems protecting Roethlisberger and even though he is a big guy, can Roethlisberger continue to take the hits he's taking? I would say no, but I would never count him out. The Steelers passing game put up good numbers, but they had problems running the ball. Mike Wallace, may be the fastest man in the NFL, torched the Colts secondary for 5 catches for 144yrds. If the Steelers expect to get back to the playoffs and make a serious super bowl run, they need to fix the offensive line issues and get more consistency out of their running game. The Steelers defense did not look as slow as they did against their rivals the Baltimore Ravens, but they still looked a little slow and they had trouble stopping Joseph Addai when it counted. Troy Polamalu gambled and he chose the wrong option. Roethlisberger was running for his life most of the game, but that goes to my point about the Steelers offensive line. The one thing that bothers me is that what happened to the Steelers running game? Mendenhall had a total of 37yrds rushing, what is that about? The Steelers had a total of 67 rushing yards and that is not very well balanced, when you 341 passing yards. I know most Steelers fans will say, a win is a win, but when they go against one of the elite teams, they will have to have a more balanced attack. That's just my 2 cents. Steelers 23 Colts 20

The Browns fooled me. I believe that Colt McCoy is a decent quarterback, but I didn't think he had it in him to lead the come back against the Dolphins. I never thought the Browns receivers would prove me wrong, but I am glad they did. Josh"pay da man"Cribs made a nice catch for a touchdown as well as Mohamed Massaquoi. I really didn't think the Browns could win without Peyton Hillis, but I was wrong and I am not afraid to admit that. Browns 17 Dolphins 16

The Bengals/49ers game, was a game of attrition. I know it was for me to watch. The Bengals lost because they really need help on offense and I am not fully sure their defense is really that good either. The Bengals could not run the ball or pass, if it wasn't for the ineptitude of the 49ers offense, the Bengals could have been blown out. Oh well, the rookie qb and receiver didn't do much of anything. I am not sure which offense is worse, the Bengals or the 49ers. 49ers 13 Bengals 8

Again, I was 3-1 this week picking the AFC North. So, that puts me at 9-3 for the year so far. Is there any of you, who thinks there record is better then mine? I would like to apologize to any Bengal fan that may read this, but seriously, watching the Bengals play is like watching grass grow. Boring and no action.
