The Denver Broncos released 14 year veteran Jamal Williams. He was signed by the Broncos to anchor their defensive line when they switched to a 3-4 under former HC Josh McDaniels, but now with John Fox taking the defense back to a 4-3 (all that switching cant be good), Williams was no longer a fit.
What does the future hold for Williams? Well there is a chance that he could retire, but at only 34 years of age I think he has a couple more good years in him. I think what is most likely to happen is that Wade Phillips, the new Defensive Coordinator for the Houston Texans, will pick him up to be that veteran 3-4 presence needed on that defensive line. I do not believe that they have a true 3-4 NT on their roster, and that is usually one of the hardest positions to fill when changing to a 3-4. Phillips should have plenty of familiarity with Williams from their shared time in San Diego when Wade was the Chargers defensive coordinator before he became the Cowboys HC.
Unless the current CBA is extended (which is looking more likely) Williams has until midnight tonight eastern time to sign with a new team before the league shuts down. That is more than enough time to get a 1 or 2 year contract hammered out, especially since Williams and his agent had to have known his release was coming with the new coaching staff and possibly could have been working on a deal prior to his official release (shh don't tell the league office though as someone might get in trouble for tampering....oh wait I forgot Roger Goodell does not care about tampering).
